Grade: A+

A co-worker of mine told me about this place a few weeks ago, and am I glad he did! Beef Jerky Outlet is located next door to the Bass Pro Shop in Denham Springs, Louisiana which is next door to Baton Rouge. I have never been to a beef jerky store before and I finally got to make the trip to it this past weekend. The place, to put it bluntly, is a heaven for all beef jerky lovers out there. When you first walk in, manager Ty Smith makes sure to greet every customer and explains how the place works. You can sample almost all of the jerky he has in bulk and sells a lot of the jerky by the pound or in pre packaged packages.

Barrels and barrels of jerky - free samples galore!

There were many brands of jerky that I had not heard of before and some that I did. For all you Pappy Kershenstein jerky fans who always email me asking where to buy the stuff, well they have tons of it here! I went through barrel after barrel trying out everything. They also carry exotic jerky like Kangaroo (which I got), Alligator, Elk, etc. They also carry a nice selection of hot sauces and salsas. This place has something for everyone.

Come on - have a sample! Over here they encourage you to try it before buying.

The manager, Ty, and I had a very good chat about everything jerky. He said that the store opened right after Thanksgiving in 2008. He recommended some stuff and I talked to him about jerky that I liked, Ty is really passionate about his jerky and wants to get more jerky that you can't find anywhere else. I think this store will just get better and better as time goes by. If this store were closer to me I'd probably be here at least once a week if not more. It's a friendly, fun atmosphere. You can even sample one of the hottest hot sauces in the world (after signing a waiver first of course!). I really hope that the location next to the Bass Pro Shop will keep this store busy and open for a long long time!

More jerky to sample and buy

So, if you're any type of fan of beef jerky (and why wouldn't you be?) you've got to make a trip to this store. I got all kind of jerky when I went and will be reviewing them all soon. I also will be back in the Baton Rouge area in a couple of weeks for a meeting and will be making a stop back to this store and when I do, I'll try to bring Ty a few samples of some jerky that I like so that he could start carrying in his store. The Beef Jerky outlet also has a store in North Carolina and does mail order at their website... dojerky.com. Again, if you're in the Baton Rouge or New Orleans area (it's worth the trip) then I highly reccommend you visit this store, and tell them that you read about them on beefjerkyland.

Goodies I picked up at The Beef Jerky Outlet! Can't wait to try them all!

Ed's Roadhouse Jerky

Ed's Roadhouse Jerky - Devil's Tongue

Grade: B

Ed's Roadhouse Jerky - Lil Sweet Jalapeno Habanero

Grade: B

I was going to review these two Ed's Roadhouse Jerky flavors separately, but because they basically taste the same, I just will review them together. I received 2 -4 oz. bags as samples from Ed's Roadhouse Jerky company. On the bag it says that nobody beats his meat, and both flavors are very good. Both jerkies are moist, and they have a great texture, they have a slight BBQ? like flavor, it's not a strong overpowering BBQ flavor, but I can definitely taste a slight BBQ flavor, everyone who I got to try the jerky said the same thing. I can say that I have never had a jerky with the same flavor and is quit unique and good. The only negative I have is that the two samples were too hot for me. The label on the Devil's Tongue package said it wasn't for wimps and I guess I am a wimp because it was too hot for my tongue. But I'm definitly gonna finish both bags because the taste is unique and awesome. I really couldn't tell the difference between both jerkies in flavor. Maybe one was hotter than the other, but they both burned the same to me. I would have definitely given the jerky an A, if not for the heat. The jerky can be ordered, at Ed's website... www.edsroadhousejerky.com. I am ordering other flavors as soon as I finish this post, because the price is very reseaonable. I will be ordering Sweet Black Pepper flavor, Sweet and Spicy flavor, and Teriyaki Ginger flavor and post for a review for all of them in the future. Oh yea, make sure to refrigerate after opening because this jerky contains no preservates! Good job Ed!!

Bourgeois Beef Jerky

Bourgeois Cajun Beef Jerky

Grade: F

There's a little meat market about 45 minutes north of my small town of Cut Off, it's located in the city of Thibodaux and is called Bourgeois' Meat Market. It's here that they make this "jerky" (if you would call it that). I wouldn't have reviewed this jerky because it's such a local product, but lately I've been seeing them putting the jerky in bags and distributing it to other places. I've seen it in Baton Rouge and New Orleans recently. I first bought this stuff when they only sold it in their market, they used to sell it by the pound and wrap it in white meat paper. It was terrible then and is still terrible now. Some people I talk to swear this is the best "jerky" ever, I don't know what's wrong with these people. Here's the reasons why I hate this stuff:

1- It's really not jerky, it more like a thick cut of meat like a beef slab or something.

2- It's too greasy, if you eat this be prepared to have greasy fingers for hours. Even the bag I have is greasy on the outside.

3- It taste nothing but smoke flavor. I don't mind smoke flavoring, but this stuff overwhelms you.

4. It just tastes outright nasty.

The only reason I have the bag that I reviewed is because a client gave me it as a "gift". I wish he would have given me the 6 or 7 bucks instead of this stuff. If you see this stuff in your local store do yourself a favor and stay away.
