Bourgeois Beef Jerky

Bourgeois Cajun Beef Jerky

Grade: F

There's a little meat market about 45 minutes north of my small town of Cut Off, it's located in the city of Thibodaux and is called Bourgeois' Meat Market. It's here that they make this "jerky" (if you would call it that). I wouldn't have reviewed this jerky because it's such a local product, but lately I've been seeing them putting the jerky in bags and distributing it to other places. I've seen it in Baton Rouge and New Orleans recently. I first bought this stuff when they only sold it in their market, they used to sell it by the pound and wrap it in white meat paper. It was terrible then and is still terrible now. Some people I talk to swear this is the best "jerky" ever, I don't know what's wrong with these people. Here's the reasons why I hate this stuff:

1- It's really not jerky, it more like a thick cut of meat like a beef slab or something.

2- It's too greasy, if you eat this be prepared to have greasy fingers for hours. Even the bag I have is greasy on the outside.

3- It taste nothing but smoke flavor. I don't mind smoke flavoring, but this stuff overwhelms you.

4. It just tastes outright nasty.

The only reason I have the bag that I reviewed is because a client gave me it as a "gift". I wish he would have given me the 6 or 7 bucks instead of this stuff. If you see this stuff in your local store do yourself a favor and stay away.

You have clearly lost your mind. I have traveled 20 miles out of my way to get this beef jerky, It is by far the best I have ever had.

I agree, I've been buying their jerky for 20 years and no matter how far I live, I always make the trip to go and get more. It's the best!

No offense, but you're an idiot.

First of all, it's not a "beef slab". It's actually beef tenderloin cut into strips then seasoned.

Second, it's not "greasy". That's actually cooked blood, like what you would have coming out of a medium-rare steak. There is no "grease" since the only thing added to the meat is a dry powder seasoning. It's more appropriate to call it "juicy".

Third, that's not "smoked flavoring" as I'm sure your undeveloped taste buds are used to. That's actually smoked meat you're eating. Smoked for 6 hours. Not dehydrated cardboard with liquid smoke added for flavor.

Finally, as for your opinion of it being "nasty", well that's your opinion, it's your blog, and you're entitled. But if you're going to consider yourself anything of a "jerky connoisseur", do yourself a favor and actually find something out about the product you're reviewing.

My great grandfather started this business in 1891, and I'm very proud to be a part of this family. I've never worked for the market and I stake no claim in the business and I don't speak for them. Nevertheless, I grew up eating this jerky and everything else, to me, "just tastes outright nasty".

You don't have to like it or eat it though. I just thought I'd clarify these facts for readers of your blog. Have a great day!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, so I can't really call you retarded or an idiot or out of your mind, I'm sure you don't like Bourgeois Beef Jerky, and that's fine. What I can say is that because you don't like Bourgeois Beef Jerky, there is no possible way that I can take you seriously on the subject of beef jerky. I can completely discount every beef jerky opinion you have as completely misguided and irrelevant. Looking through your reviews, it seems like you're the kinda guy who likes the tasteless card board gas station variety of beef jerky. Bourgeois is not that, so I'm glad you don't like it. It's REAL MEAT that's been smoked and has flavor, not some horse hide that was run through a machine and dehydrated. We've established that you like bland low rent jerky. That's good to know. That doesn't make you a fool, that just means that we have different taste in jerky. Even if you don't like real quality meat, I would think that Bourgeois would get at least a C, but the F makes me think that maybe you have some kind of ax to grind or something. I don't know. Good luck to you and your blog.

You're obviously confused. We don't sell it anywhere in NOLA or Baton Rouge. I know that because we don't sell it anywhere except our one store right outside of Thibodaux.

I'm with the majority of the post here I think their jerky is great. So if in the area please give it a try and decide for yourself. I've never tried any of the pre packed stuff, only fresh from the shop. Buy more than you think you need cause one pound just won't make the ride home.

Try their hog's head cheese or their deliciuos turkey cheese and you will be hooked for life, no joke. Everything this market sells is TOP SHELF no if's ands or buts about it. Don't let this blog BS you their meat is off the hook.
(no pun)

There is no doubt the originator of this post did not the real deal, he must of tried a knockoff.

I didn't like it either. Way too salty.

You must be the competition!!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the person writing this blog is closely related to a competitor because anyone with taste buds will tell you that Bourgeois' beef jerky is the absolute best. I've been making the drive from Baton Rouge down to Thibodaux for years to pick up a couple pounds of fresh and a box of shrink-wrapped to send to friends and customers. This jerky is the absolute best I've ever tasted.

So, I'm the competition??? What competition? There's no other place in the Thibodaux area that sells beef jerky. I stand by my review...

Dude you are insane.. Bourgeois' jerky is incredible.. I only wish it were closer because when I buy it, I get like 10lbs at the time and wipe it out way too quick.

I am from south east Alabama. My husband works out of Grand Isle He gose by there often toget us some beef jerky. Our 12 year old grand daughter said she would give him her allownce to go by and get her some. Now I may just be an old country red neck from Alabama but this the BEST jerky I have ever had.

Harold,

Your credibility as a 'rater of beef jerky' just went out of the door! You don't open a business in 1891 and stay in business for over a hundred years with bad products. At the end of the day, you can give them an 'F', but I bet their wallets are alot F-atter than yours!!!!

I was excited to find a blog dedicated to beef jerky, but after reading your review on bourgeois cajun beef jerky, let alone the grading, I can't take you or this blog serious !!! no offense sir, I don't know you personally, but I can't trust your judgement on jerky, or anything food related for that matter !!! I don't know if you're being honest with your opinion, or if you have some kind of personal vendetta against the smokehouse, or if you might even be the competition, who knows, but from my personal experience, as well as every other commentator on here, its obvious you're delusional when it comes to whats good and whats not !!! you must like that commercial/dehydrated/cardboard stuff !!!

Only one commentor agrees with you. So there's a 95% probability you ARE retarded! And, yes, I've eaten their Jerky many times and it's AWESOME!

Stick to your Slim Jims, please. What is your idea of good jerky... Jack Links?

I remember my riding with my dad as a kid to Bourgeois' to pick up what he called a 'turkey roll' - I think it was a boneless turkey rolled up and trussed. We'd always get some beef jerky. It remains one of the greatest flavor memories of my life and instilled in me a true appreciation for smoke. I'm not a jerky expert, so maybe there's some sort of technicality that separates it from the other commercial dried up meat chips coated in crap flavorings. I do know that Bourgeois jerky is packed with meat flavor and has more in common with the great dry-cured meats in the world, making your mouth salivate as you eat it as opposed to drying it out and feeling like sawdust. It is the benchmark.
The only other jerky I've ever had in my life that comes close was some that I bought at a little wooden roadside stand while driving through Colarado. Both their's and Bourgeois' were more like preserved smokey juicy meaty strips of pure meat. This blog would be akin to someone starting a beer blog and rating Miller Lite or Budweiser as the best beers.

I work as a consult for many major oil companies and can't tell you how many dozens of salesmen come through the door every week with trinkets or food. At least once week I am brought Bourgeois Beef Jerky. It is always a consistent product full of mouth watering flavor. I have to hide it quick, or it disappears.

Every consultant I know in my position feels the same, and I have never heard a negative comment until reading this blog. I have heard some say it is just good but not the greatest, but never have I heard a negative comment.

You must have another agenda to have given such a negative critique, as I have talked to people from all over the country that love this stuff. Personally, I think Bourgeois might become the next Duck Dynasty.

For the record, this Texan thinks this is one of the best Jerked meats I've ever had the privilege to taste.

He's not retarded. He's absolutely correct about the smoke flavor. It overwhelms you. If that's what you like then it might be the best.
If you driving that far out of your way to get this then you were eating that processed Jack links crap, or worse before.
It's good if you like this style.

Every one is entitled to their own opinion.I have purchased meat from Bourgeois' for many years and am a truly satisfied customer.

Wow! I live in Baton Rouge. Started buying this beef jerky 20+ years ago. Had a job that required me to go to Houma almost weekly.

Here's how wrong you are about it. In 2010 I leased my offshore boat to BP for the oil spill cleanup. Would buy a lb or so on the way to Cocodrie. Let other guys working the spill try it. After that, I was buying 20+ lbs / trip and making special trips when possible.

In 20 years, I haven't met ANYONE who doesn't absolutely Love this stuff.
