Big Mamou Cajun Beef Jerky - Boiled Crawfish Flavor

Big Mamou Cajun Beef Jerky - Boiled Crawfish Flavor

Grade: D

Readers of beefjerkyland, I have to tell you right off the bat... I love boiled crawfish!! Living in Southern Louisiana I was brought up on boiled crawfish, if you want to know how much I love crawfish then read my post on my other website, runningwithabita.com, if you want a direct like to the article then click here. So now that you know that I love boiled crawfish then just think how excited I was when I saw this new jerky at my local supermarket! The price was kind of high, but I bought it anyway thinking about how novel of an idea it is to make a boiled crawfish flavored beef jerky. I got home and tore the bag open and tried a piece, it did kind of taste like crawfish boil (if you don't know what crawfish boil is here goes.... crawfish boil is a liquid that we use to boil our crawfish, it's flavor is distinct and makes our crawfish all so good, it's flavor is strong). So again, I tried the first piece and I thought it did taste like crawfish boil, so I kind of enjoyed it. Then I tried more and more and the more I tried the more I realized that crawfish boil is good to flavor crawfish, it's not good to flavor beef jerky. After a while the crawfish boil flavor overpowered everything else and all I could taste was the crawfish boil. Then I realized something, this didn't really have a crawfish boil taste it tasted more like Red Hot candys and it was destroying my tongue. I tried a few more pieces over the next few days and found that the flavor was just too strong of a Red Hot candy flavor and couldn't handle it no more. I threw the rest out after a while. The jerky was kind of greasy, but had a good texture, but the taste overpowers you and really makes for a bad experience. I'll stick with my boiled crawfish and let stronger taste buds than mine have this jerky.

*One note: My buddy at Beef Jerky Outley in Denham Springs, Louisiana told me recently that Big Mamou can only sell their jerky in Louisiana, if you're still interested in trying it even after reading the review drop me an email and I'll see if I can get some to you.

I'm from Cut Off, Louisiana. I eat crawfish at least 2 or 3 times a week from Dec. to July, and crawfish boil flavor is great to season crawfish, but it's crappy to season beef jerky with. This stuff will destroy your taste buds and after a while it just ends up tasting like Red Hot candies. Sorry, not a big fan of this stuff. BTW, I'm an awesome crawfish cook, and if you don't think I know crawfish, read my other blog article, http://www.runningwithabita.com/2009/05/crawfish.html , and you'll see how obsessed I am with Crawfish.

I wouldn't compare it to good boiled crawfish at all, this beef jerky taste like the old muddy crawfish. Horrible stuff!

It's Jerky for heavens sake quit comparing it to your crawfish it's just a flavor. I like it , get off your bayou tradition high horses. and try something different once in a while.

If you are obsessed with crawfish quit trying to be a jerky judge. The jerky is just a little something different than the norm, I happen to really like jerky, I don't think the crawfish boil SEASONED jerky is bad at all, just a different spice. I'm not from. Cut Off I'm from. Marrero xnd I can boil crawfish pretty good also. I don't expect the jerky to taste like crawfish.

Shannon, I'm from North Louisiana and our crawfish taste great. Well, at least my family's does. In your defense, we did migrate here from southern Louisiana a couple of generations back.

Harold, I think this product tasted fantastic. I am a very particular eater and I taste no Red Hot candy flavor.
