Josephson's Smoked Original Salmon Jerky

Josephson's Smoked Original Salmon Jerky

Grade: F

Have you ever eaten something so bad that you know you will have nightmares about it. Well, I have, and it's called Josephson's Smoked Original Salmon Jerky. A couple of friends were at the house and I decided to pull this jerky out to try it with them. As soon as I opened this bag and the smell hit me, I knew I was in trouble. The smell is awful. Think about a rotten fish smell, and that's what you have. I was about to throw the jerky out as soon as the smell hit me, but being a trooper, I tried it. It didn't taste as bad as it smelled but the taste was horrible. It tasted like rotten fish to me. They sell this for $9.95 for 3 ounces. I ended up giving some to my cats, who seemed to love it. So this jerky will be used as expensive cat treats.

Mingua Brothers changes shipping costs - Now offers free shipping!!

A while back I ranted against Mingua Brothers Beef Jerky about charging so much for shipping, but today I stopped by their website, www.minguabeefjerky.com, and put a bag of jerky in my shopping cart and then saw that they now ship via FedEx for free! What a difference! A few months ago they were charging $9 to ship a bag of jerky and now it's free. A 4oz bag of their jerky (I highly recommend the original) will now only run you $6.99 with free shipping, or throw in an extra $5 and get 8oz. I bought a couple of bags and even bought a bag of their dog treats for my dog. I, for one, am glad to see that Mingua has now changed their shipping policy. So show them your gratitude and order a bag or two.

Ed's Roadhouse Jerky - Sweet & Spicy "Apple"

Ed's Roadhouse Jerky - Sweet & Spicy "Apple"

GRADE: A

If you read this blog on a regular basis then you know that I'm a huge fan of Ed's Roadhouse Jerky. I said it before and I'll say it again, Ed makes some of the best, most unique jerky out there. Go to his website and you'll see jerky flavors like, Sweet & Spicy Orange, Hawaiian Pineapple Ginger, BBQ Chipotle jerky just to name a few. No other companies that I know of have combinations like that. And now Ed comes out with Sweet & Spicy Apple! When I first heard about this flavor from Ed's, I thought for sure it would have a spicy apple cider flavor, but I was wrong. The flavor is not unlike Ed's Sweet & Spicy Orange flavor, but instead of the orange flavor, it has a nice hint of apple. And like the Sweet & Spicy Orange, the apple flavor doesn't overpower the nice sweet & spiciness of the jerky. Again, like all of Ed's jerky it's a very unique flavor that must be tried to appreciate. The jerky itself is of the high quality that Ed's jerky always is. In case you've never tried Ed's jerky before, his jerky literally melts in your mouth. The meat used is very high quality and the jerky is always fresh. Ed's Roadhouse has done it again and has come up with a real winner here. Ed's jerky can be bought online at his site, www.edsroadhousejerky.com. His prices are unbelievable for the high quality of jerky you are getting, and the shipping is very reasonable! Ed recently stated that he's working on a new flavor that will take beef jerky to a whole new level and after seeing the jerky he has put out already, I believe him!

Buffalo Bills Country Cut - Teriyaki

Buffalo Bills Country Cut - Teriyaki

Grade: B-

Buffalo Bills brand beef jerky has always been hit or miss with me. I loved their Premium Spicy jerky, but found their Western Cut Original just average. This jerky is good but not as good as their Premium Spicy jerky. The texture of the jerky is on the moist and tender side just like it states on the package. Your fingers will be wet when you eat this jerky. If you read other reviews of mine, you know I prefer my jerky on the "dryer" side, but the moist and tender texture makes this a good chew. The jerky has a nice "meaty" flavor, with a bit of sweetness (the ingredients state, "maple flavor" and that is probably what is giving it the sweetness flavor). You can also taste the onion and garlic powder slightly. The soy sauce also has a presence in the taste. If I were eating this in a blind taste test, I would never guess it was Teriyaki flavor jerky. So if you're looking for a strong Teriyaki flavor jerky then this may not be the jerky for you, to me it has more of a roast flavor instead of a Teriyaki flavor. Still, I ate the whole bag and would not turn it away if it was offered again. You can find the jerky on their site, www.choochoorsnacks.com.

Incredible Jerky - Hot Jamaican Flavor

Incredible Jerky - Hot Jamaican Flavor

Grade: B

I recently got 4 different jerkys to try from Incredible Jerky. Looking at the packaging, you can tell this is not your normal jerky company. The packaging is the jerky in a "foodsaver" vacuum bag. But you know what, who cares about packaging, I kind of like it, it shows that this stuff is not overly processed like a lot of mainstream jerky out there. I know what you're saying, enough about the packaging, what about the jerky! Let's start with the texture, the jerky is definitely not a dry variety, but very moist. It's a little moister than I like my jerky, but I can live with that, the chew was very good, and you can tell it's a high quality product. The taste "tastes" just like the name states. It has a Jamaican jerky flavor and is quite hot. It was a little too hot for my taste buds, but I definitely finished it all with no problem. The flavor is very unique. I found the jerky had a good taste and a nice texture, but it wasn't enough to push it to an A for me. You could do worse out there as this jerky is not as dull as some mainstream brands. The jerky can be bought on Incredible Jerky's website, http://www.incrediblejerky.com/ . On the site they have some very interesting varieties of beef jerky that they make, they also make chicken jerky (which I will review in the future). There is a price list on the site and since their Paypal system is not in place you will need to contact them to get shipping and payment information. In summary, this flavor of Incredible Jerky, was a little too spicy for my tastes, but if you're looking for a unique tasting jerky you should enjoy this one.

Smoky Mountain Beef Jerky - Roasted Garlic

Smoky Mountain Beef Jerky - Roasted Garlic

Grade: A

I've really become a fan of the Smoky Mountain brand of jerky lately. I've had their Elk and Venison jerky but this is the first time I review their beef jerky. I wanted to try out the Roasted Garlic flavor first since it sounded like an interesting jerky to try from them, and this one does not disappoint at all. Smoky Mountain jerky's texture is how I like my jerky, thin and dry that moistens up when you start chewing. The first jerky I ever ate, when I was a kid, had the same texture, and so I'm very partial to that type of jerky. This jerky also packs a nice flavor, Smoky Mountain must marinate their beef well, because this jerky has all kind of flavors coming from it, the main one being garlic of course. The garlic doesn't overpower the other flavors and is kind of subtle but it's definitely in there. I can taste Worcestershire, a very small hint of sweetness, garlic, a little soy sauce and a combination of spices that are out of this world. Good quality jerky with great flavors make this jerky an A on my scale. Yes, the sodium is kind of on the high side, but who cares about that when you are eating jerky. You can order this jerky and all of Smoky Mountain's jerky on their website, http://jaysjerky.com/ . The price for 4oz was only $5.75 and to ship 4 bags of jerky the shipping was $8.99, they used FedEx and I got the jerky in 2 days (wow!). Again, a high quality jerky that really packs a nice flavor punch.
